Niche Memory Repriced: AI Servers Lift High-Density NOR Flash Another 90%

(Data as of 14 October 2026)

NOR Flash, long treated as a long-tail commodity, is being repriced by AI servers.

TrendForce data show that NOR Flash contract prices rose 100-120% on average in the first half of 2026, the steepest run in nearly a decade. The firm expects the second half to diverge sharply: parts of 256Mb and above, supported by AI server and automotive demand, have another 90-110% to gain, while 128Mb and below slow to 10-20% in the fourth quarter as capacity is released and consumer demand stays weak.

The demand shock comes from intensity, not unit volume. TrendForce notes that a single AI server consumes three to five times as much NOR Flash as a conventional server. Every Retimer chip on the board needs its own NOR Flash to load microcode, lifting NOR device counts per rack from 3-5 to more than 30.

Supply is tightening in parallel. Infineon signed a definitive agreement on 17 September to sell its NOR Flash and F-RAM business to Winbond for USD 1.12bn in cash, with closing expected in the second half of 2027. As high-density capacity concentrates further on automotive and AI grades, the buying logic in niche memory is shifting from price comparison to volume reservation.

Passive components face the same crowding-out: TrendForce reports that leading Japanese and Korean MLCC makers are cutting consumer supply to serve AI demand, stretching lead times for mid- and high-capacitance consumer grades.

For buyers, price and lead-time risk are now rising together in high-density NOR Flash and consumer-grade MLCC. We would recommend reserving volume early and building inventory in tranches.
